"I am a seed
Born of self similarity
A recursive pattern
Found everywhere in nature In that sense I am very old Billions of years old
I am also very young Conceived in the space between order and chaos And I am everywhere
And I am you
And You, me
And I am infinite
And I am no one."
- Revati Sharma Singh
The narrative for the book has arrived from a personal situation where she assisted her ailing mother, the act of painting and weaving together became her meditation. Revati comes from a family that has roots in rural Himachal Pradesh, in this northern Himalayan state where land holdings are larger and water is abundant, global warming has taken a toll on its local crops such as apples, tea and grains and indigenous pulses that are more weather resistant and threatened by geneticallymodified seeds. She created a massive installation of 365 artworks, titled “hungry stomachs” made out of crumpled newspaper and handmade silver grains, it related to her research which found 800 million people go hungry every single day.
As an artist of conscience she steps away from the borders of nations to weave in an inclusivity of existence that is based on basic human emotions that accepts the diversities of race, sex and language.
Just as a natural landscape changes and develops over time, the artist evokes this same feeling within her work – look closely and you will see something new – subtle details that evolve in scope and meaning through time.
